Down South
A few T-dot MCs and producers have been making the move to the States recently.Producer Marco Polo who has been making his name producing for underground MCs like Pumpkinhead, Masta Ace and even Das EFX is spending a lot of time down south, as is former Nefarius producer/MC Collizhun.
Add a couple more to that list. MC Troy Dunnit from Montreal's Obscure Disorder (aka the group A-Trak DJed for before Kanye got ahold of him) has made the move as has Toronto emcee Eternia, heard here in a radio interview with Jay Smooth of hiphopmusic.com.
Eternia's interview touches on a lot of the differences between Canada and the U.S. when it comes to arts funding, yet she still made the move. It's an interesting topic whether or not a Canadian hip-hop artist has to make this move or not as Kardinal, arguably the most recognized Canadian MC in the States is still based in Toronto and would prefer to stay here if he can.
Obviously there are pros and cons to both approaches, and the best way ultimately seems to be what personally feels right for the artist. But as many Canadians involved in the arts know, the irony is the recognition from home usually comes after you've made it elsewhere.
